Arlyn Campbell's Classic Garage with non-classic
Utility vehicle. Everyone wants one of these!
A good time was had by one and
all at the CCCA St. Patrick’s Day green party at Arlyn and Jane Campbells’
lovely home. We had plenty of green that day, from Jane’s green hair to
Frank Guy’s own concoction of green beer. We started the day with the usual
kicking of tires while munching on wonderful Irish cheeses and getting on
our green beads, so no one would get pinched. We progressed to a wonderful
meal of brisket, cabbage, and all kinds of green stuff, dining by the pool.
When lunch was finished, we had a business meeting, and Al filled us in on
the National Meeting results, while the rest of us were stuffing ourselves
with green cookies, chocolate cake and lemon curd cupcakes. As usual, CCCA
members had fun doing what we do best: talk old cars and eat good food!
Did somebody say "Let's Eat?"

Enjoying a pleasant day with
friends. That's what the NTR is all about.

2012 CCCA Annual Meeting Recap
2012 Warshawski Award Winner (Best of Show)1940 Packard Darrin owned by NTR Regional Director, Steve Chapman
After a long time
planning, preparing, and finishing final details, the 2012
Classic Car Club of America® Annual Meeting finally arrived at
the Hilton DFW Lakes Hotel in Grapevine, January 4-7, 2012.
Ready to greet the roughly 200 attendees with a hearty "Howdy!"
were the members of the North Texas Region!
Wednesday’s trip to Fort
Worth started with a wonderful lunch at Reata Restaurant and
then gave participants time to spend time in Sundance Square.
Some went shopping for a little something Western as a memento
of their visit to Cowtown, while others visited the Sid
Richardson Museum and its collection of Remingtons and Russells.
A few unlucky souls who’d planned on going to Fort Worth had to
miss out when the Grapevine Fire Marshal decided that cars had
to be started outside as they arrived, rather than on Saturday
in Texas Grande Hall as had been long-planned. After much
discussion that day, the fire marshal finally gave the OK for
the rest of the cars to be judged according to the original
plans! Wednesday night featured a festive Mexican buffet and
Welcome Party in the International Ballroom at the hotel,
followed by the ever-popular Hospitality Room.

Thursday’s schedule was chock full of activities. Regional
Directors and Editors all had meetings prior to the buses
departing for Panther City Classic Autos, the private collection
of Paul Andrews. What an incredible collection of Full Classics®
and other various automobiles! After lunch, catered by the City
Club of Fort Worth, and time to enjoy looking at the cars and
other automobilia, the buses loaded back up for the short drive
to the Fort Worth Stockyards. They arrived in time for visitors
to get to see the daily cattle drive down Exchange Avenue in the
Stockyards, before giving participants time to shop. There may
have been a pair or two of boots purchased by CCCA members
before they headed to the World’s Largest Honky-Tonk, Billy
Bob’s Texas! A Texas buffet, featuring chicken fried steak and
brisket, satisfied many hungry tummies before most headed back
to the hotel on the early buses. A few brave souls stuck around
for the Thursday night line dancing lessons offered at Billy
Bob’s before heading back.

Friday started off with the Annual Membership meeting and
continental breakfast. New board members were elected, and
reports were given by all committees. The Museum Membership
meeting followed, and then it was time to hop on the buses
again. This time they headed to Dallas and Sam Pack’s museum and
warehouse. The group was met by Sam Pack himself as they arrived
at the museum, which houses mostly 1950’s and 1960’s cars. At
his warehouse, a few blocks from the museum, there were another
200+ cars and trucks to see
.
The "Diamonds and Denim" Regional
Awards Banquet was held in the Austin Ranch Party Barn, just a
short jaunt from the hotel. The banquet was more casual than
most years, with some people arriving in their recently
purchased Western wear and boots! As the awards were presented,
it was announced that in honor of his pioneering of the CCCA’s
website, the Non-Print Award has been renamed the "Chuck Conrad
Website Award". The North Texas Region was awarded 1
st
place in Membership
(for stability and growth) for the second straight year, and 3rd
place in the
Dietrich Annual Meeting award for percentage of members
attending and showing Classics.

Saturday was the big day as judging of
the Classics began around 9:30am. Along with the official
judges, there was a group of people who had taken National Head
Judge John Kefalonitis’ judging class and were trying their
hands as apprentice judges (their scores were compared, but did
not count in the judging). After judging was completed, the
general public as well as other car clubs were invited in to
enjoy the cars. There was a good turnout of non-CCCA people
coming to view the incredible display in Texas Grande Hall.
Saturday’s tour began with a wonderful
lunch in the Zodiac Room located in the flagship Neiman-Marcus
store in downtown Dallas. Appetites satisfied with the signature
popovers and strawberry butter, orange soufflé, chicken salad
and more, there was time for a bit of shopping (perhaps a little
bling for the evening’s awards banquet?) before re-boarding
buses for the drive to Carol & John Ridings Lee’s home and
collection. The Lee home, which is a renovated and remodeled
Southwestern Bell telephone building, houses both his office and
their amazing collections. As his collection consists mostly of
sports and racing cars from the 1930’s, it gave those attending
a third type of collection to view during their time in the
Metroplex.
Past Presidents, Al Kroemer, Chuck Conrad, Katie
Robbins, Bill Davis, Chris Bock, Jon Lee and Dick Roach cut the 60th
Anniversary Cake.

The Tech Session on Saturday afternoon,
led by National Director Jerry Steelman, featured Hatfield
Restoration, McPherson College Automotive Restoration program,
and Skip Ritner. Hatfield Restoration spoke about automobile
upholstery work, while Brian Martin gave an overview of the
McPherson College program that will provide the hands to work on
the Classics down the road. Ritner shared his work on a
replacement Packard part.
Saturday night’s Awards Banquet was a
celebration of the kickoff of the 60
th
year of the CCCA as
well as the incredible showing of cars at the Annual Meeting.
Prior to awards being handed out, a birthday cake featuring the
red Classic car logo and "Happy 60th
Birthday"
was rolled out with past Presidents in attendance cutting the
first pieces. Chuck Conrad was awarded the "Citation for
Distinguished Service", the highest award the CCCA gives. Six
perfect 100-point cars were awarded during the evening, all by
NTR members.

The crowning achievement was the
awarding of the Warshawsky Trophy for Best of Show – going to
NTR Regional Director Steve Chapman’s 1940 Packard 1807
convertible sedan by Darrin.
A big shout of "thanks" goes to all
those in the North Texas Region who helped make the Annual
Meeting a success. Many compliments were given to the Region for
their outstanding job on the event, making everyone feel
welcome, and giving everyone a real taste of Texas!
