A Very Unusual Radio Station

KZQX has the distinction of being one of the first five Low Power FM stations to be licensed by the FCC in Texas.  We signed on the air September 18, 2002.

We are licensed to Chalk Hill Educational Media, Inc, a 501(c)(3) not for profit Texas Corporation.

There are no paid employees.  Everyone you hear and all the folks behind the scenes are volunteers.  Without their help, we wouldn't be here.

We are supported by sponsors who underwrite our programming, as well as by donations from listeners and friends who think this kind of radio needs to be on the air.

There is no particular agenda on the part of the station, other than to be good neighbors who are active in the community.  We are however, big fans of music and music education.  We think good music is important to the quality of life.

While we recognize that there are many genres of music, some are undoubtedly more significant than others.  There is life beyond Rap, Hip-Hop and Three Chord Country. If we help demonstrate that to people who haven't had the opportunity to sample this wonderful music and the great performers who brought it to you, then we've done our job.

We're always happy to hear from our listeners.  Your suggestions and comments are always welcome.

Are Now Playing on Unforgettable QX-FM

WHY DOES THE AUDIO SOUND CHOPPY OR CUT OUT AND BUFFERS FREQUENTLY?

• The faster the internet connection, the better the stream. We stream at 40 kbs.  If your Internet connection can't support that amount of throughput (plus whatever else you are doing) it will stop playing our stream and buffer until it has time to catch up.  The result is interrupted audio. This will be an issue on all but the best dial up connections, but should work well with DSL or cable Internet services.

• We intentionally limit our bandwidth to 40 kbs so our friends with dial up connections can listen.  We feel like it is a good compromise between fidelity and reliability.  It also fits with our (nearly non-existent) budget.  To this date, our web stream does not come close to paying for itself on a monthly basis.  We provide it as a free service which is subsidized through the normal over the air operation of the radio station.

• The flow of audio can also be interrupted by internet congestion. Congestion and delays are due to insufficient bandwidth during high activity on the Internet, or at your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Streaming can be affected in places (such as businesses) where many people are on the same IP address and sharing bandwidth.

• If your memory or cache/temporary file folders are full, audio streaming errors may occur. Try emptying these folders, and the recycling bin. After you have deleted some files it may also be helpful to reboot your machine in order to free-up some more memory. Closing some windows and applications may also help.

•  Then, sometimes, the problem is on our end.  We are located in a rural area.  At this time, we have only one choice for an Internet connection.  Sometimes our connection gets overloaded, which makes our stream stop, stutter and rebuffer.  We don't like doing that and are working on measures to correct it.

Meanwhile, we appreciate you hanging in there with us.
