The 19th Hole
by Sandy LyonThis time of year the golf is kind of hit and miss, although to think of it, most all golf is hit and miss however, I regress. What I was getting at is that the weather plays a big part of January and February golf. This time of year on cold days there is very little golf played and on warm days the course is crowded with players hoping to get in some fun and exercise while they can. Before the tournaments of 2009 start, and new pictures of new winners are displayed, here are some of the highlights of 2008 in golf.
Ricky West accepting the $5.00 from Marje Theiman after "The Last Big Grudge Match."
One of the fun things that ended was the "Last Big Grudge Match" with Ricky West and Marje Thieman FINALLY ending their series of grudge matches. Ricky took top honors and got the $5.00 bill that was passed back and forth, for good. I am told he took it home and framed it. Marje conceded that Ricky was the winner and "best player". There is still much trash talk and muttering about the game, but it is believed that this was truly the "Last Big Grudge Match".
Winners of the annual String Tournament
Team Work always works well! The 2008 annual String Tournament had the team of Glen Kernohan, Shay Maloch, Linda Cochran, and Gerald Cochran coming in with 23 under par for first place. That string was used to the last inch.
Alternate Shots Winners Bob Wright & Jimmy VaughnThe 2008 Alternate Shots Game had Bob Wright and Jimmy Vaughan looking really good. They were in the first place team with partners Scott and Kami Day and they took first place in the Pair Category also.
Cox Family on Independence Day Tournament
The 2008 Cox Tournament, which was an invitation only affair, was great fun to watch as well as play. The players all came in Independence Day costumes and had their own rules (which I am not sure was real golf) but who cared. Would like to tell you who won, but I haven't a clue.
First Place Winners in Porter Charity Tournament
The 2008 Porter Charity Tournament was a crush, with 18 teams and a full day of fun. Winners were Scott Mitchell, Derrick Elrod, Shawn Touch, and Robert Cole. They won first place by only one stroke from the runners up with 13 under par.
The 2008 Godfather Tournament was a private, two day event, held by the local group called the Mafia. Winner was Phillip Wright.
The CCGA Championship was the last big event of 2008, winners were James Alford in the Senior Division, Ken Hines in Men's Division and Carol Oliver in the woman's division.
Tournaments haven't started yet because weather is still too "iffy". The first Tournament of the year is the St. Patrick's Scramble, which will be held on Saturday, March 14th, at 9:00 am. There will be a lunch following the game and the price for all of it is $15.00. Start planning on joining in.
